Göreme is located in the heart of Cappadocia. The sandstone formations in Cappadocia are spectacular. Many of these sandstone cones are hollowed out for buildings. Some of them have Byzantine churches cut out of the rocks.

In some of the valleys, the rocks have pigeon holes cut out of the walls. Pigeon guano was a very important fertilizer, so the pigeon holes were very valuable. Some of them were nicely decorated.

A balloon ride over Cappadocia is a spectacular way to see these formations.

Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
