Dear Kirk,
Well, I expected a response from some who disagreed with
my
thoughts. I didn't expect for it to be from someone so closely
tied to the
tragic event itself. My most sincere condolences for the trauma
you must
have suffered. I too have watched a friend crash. It is many
years but I can
still recall the whole thing in slow motion and in terrible
detail. You have
my most sincere sympathy.
You are correct that I made a sweeping leap of assumption
in my
assessment of an event which I did not witness. That assessment
was born of
this: If Mr. Merritt did not intend to crash (and I felt safe in
that
assumption) and if there was no mechanical failure causing a loss
of control
(I had heard no mention of any from any source) then the only
reason left
was pilot error. The final NTSB ruling, as you point out, will
bear out which it was.
Perhaps you are right that I should have waited until the
last
findings were in to make my analysis, but, I was weary of the
"How could
this happen to such a fine guy?" wailing on this forum. My
"teaching", as you called it, was
not intended for you, sir, given the depth of your pain, but to
those who
are new at this and are vicariously experiencing their first
aerobatic loss.
I just wanted them to understand that there will be others. Learn
from each.
I hope that you will understand and forgive my perhaps untimely
admonishments, if
that is how you perceived them. I cannot share your pain but only
empathize
with it. I certainly meant no disrespect to you or Mr. Merritt.
Sincerely
Rob Dorsey
