In a message dated 6/25/2003 8:43:27 PM Pacific Standard Time, avian at xtra.co.nz writes: > any thoughts on the best replacement engine mounts for our stock Pitts > S2S. > Well, I don't know if this is the best info, but I'll recount the experience I had one year ago with my S-2B, which I assume uses same mounts as S-2S. Same engine, anyway. I bought my B as a wreck in '95. When re-installing the engine in '97, I found that the old mounts were Lord J7401-2, evidently OEM with 707 hours on them (cure date stamped was '85, my B is an '86). Pretty beat. I couldn't find any of these. Aviat now uses Barry mounts and apparently has a proprietary deal with Barry. I bought Barry mounts and spacer tubes from Aviat (this in '97, remember). The Barry spacer tubes are about 1/16" longer, as I recall. OK...June of '02, the Barry mounts looking pretty flat with 362 hours on them. Called Aviat...none in stock, but they might be placing an order in a couple of weeks. This wasn't so good, as I had a contest coming up RSN. No other supply house carried the Barrys...again, I think they're proprietary with Aviat. No Lord J7401-2's to be found either. Another reader of this list suggested I call Lord and discuss Lord J3049-39's. Might'a been Dale (?) at Lord, very accomodating, told me that they developed this mount for the likes of Sean Tucker, who might abuse his mounts even worse than I do. They are (were?) official engine mount of the Northern Light team of Extra 300's, too. Don't those folks fly jets now? Anyway... Well, if they're good enough for Sean, they're good enough for me, so I ordered a set and had 'em in a week or so. A couple of cautionary notes: they're not "approved" for the B, but as mine is Experimental anyway, I figgered I'd experiment some more. Who'd know, anyway?? The hole thru the steel plate part of the doughnut is too small, so I chucked 'em up in a lathe and put a 1/2" drill in the tailstock and bored them out. These new mounts are larger O.D., need to check clearance to engine mount tubes closely, might need to shim them out 1/16" (a sillymeter and a half or so); I didn't need to. And it's necessary to relieve the top rear engine baffle for the larger O.D., so have those tin snips handy. Lastly, I used my old Lord spacer tubes. A year and about 100 hours later, the new mounts still look perfect, no sag, engine seems smoother than ever, I'm completely happy with them.
