Second-hand information on the crash:
A respected airshow pilot and builder told me that the plane was somewhere in
the neighborhood of 20 years old and (to his knowledge) had never been
recovered. Apparently it had been flown fairly hard on a regular basis for
many years. In addition, it was disassembled and trailered from show to show
as previously described. He also described the plane being reassembled at the
airshow in the midst of interruptions. He said that post-accident inspection
of the wing spars showed cracks that were old, based on stains in them.
Although the pilot may have been blameless and the victim of bad luck, there
may also be a message in all of this: If you are going to fly an aerobatic
plane at its limits, it needs to more carefully inspected at more requent
intervals, and perhaps recovered more frequently than usual (to get a close
look at the insides of those crucial areas). Also, at a contest or airshow,
there are times when you cannot allow yourself to be distracted from a check,
double-check, and triple-check system.
I can't personally vouch for the accuracy of this information, but I can sure
vouch for the guy who told me.
