I will second your recommendation regarding the legal services plan that AOPA offers. I am an attorney on the AOPA Panel and can tell you that AOPA is a dream insurance company (ok-it's actually a prepaid legal services plan). Most third party payors try to place unrealistic limits on the services that they will allow and their adjusters (ok-claims representatives) will try to micromanage the cases they are supervising. Many hire legal fee auditing firms and play all sorts of games designed to minimize the amounts they pay out for the defense. I have never had the AOPA challenge anything I have needed to do to defend a pilot. The AOPA is very member-driven and they realize that revenue is maximized by providing extremely good member services, thereby retaining and obtaining members, rather than by minimizing those services.
Even if you are not a member of the plan or even of AOPA call them if you get in trouble with the Feds. They can put you in touch with someone they consider to be knowledgable in Certificate Action cases. But if you want them to pay the bill, you have to join.
(The best insurance is to carry an ASR Form somwhere in your aircraft, AND somwhere in your flightbag AND somewhere in your hanger AND somewhere in your house. And use it. If anything happens during a flight, send it immediately. It's free and it works.)

Just a note to those who use the space above the Sourland Mountain (really just a small ridge) in central New Jersey for aerobatic practice. Due to noise complaints which developed into Congressional inquiries, the FAA although acknowledging that aerobatics are permitted in the area (it's not a box) have made it clear they will be watching and accepting complaints not for noise which they don't regulate but for aerobatics outside the permitted area. I've been told they violated someone last week (not confirmed yet). I would encourage all, as I have previously, to seriously consider joining the AOPA Legal Services Plan for the cost of about an hour's gas. It can save you thou$and$ and will permit you/us to fight for our right to fly. Watch your AGL.
