To All IAC'ers, The deadline to submit nominations for the prestigious IAC non-flying awards is June 15. To date I have only received nominations for the newly established Kathy Jaffe Volunteer Award. I have not yet received one nomination for the Robert L. Heuer, Frank Price Cup, or Harold E. Neumann Awards. Interested members should refer to the IAC Awards web pages that are located on the Chapter 78 website. The web address is: www.citabria.com/chap78/IAC%20Awards.htm. A complete history of each of the trophies is shown along with the list of recipients and a picture of the master trophy. It is important to see the past recipients to be better informed on making new nominations. Once the nominations are collected, they will be presented to the IAC Board of Directors for voting. The Board selects the final winner by secret ballot for each of these awards. A description of the awards and the criteria are as follows The Robert L. Heuer Trophy for Judging Excellence Member Sam Burgess of San Antonio, Texas conceived the idea for presenting a trophy to the outstanding aerobatic judge each year. He provided the permanent trophy to recognize the outstanding achievements made to competition aerobatics by the judges. The Award is given annually for outstanding performance as an aerobatic judge during the contest year. General guidelines, though not requirements, for the award include National Judgeship or having judged a minimum of three contests, one of which should have been the IAC Championships or the U.S. Nationals. This award is presented the year following the contest year for which it is presented. Thus, nominations are based on outstanding judging in the year 1999. The recipient receives a plaque and the master trophy remains on display in the IAC Pavilion in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The Frank Price Cup The award was conceived and donated by R.J. Rouse of Texas. It was created to recognize outstanding individuals in aerobatics and in honor of aerobatic pioneer Frank Price, the first American to compete in the World Aerobatic Championships. The purpose of the award is to recognize the person who has contributed the most to the sport of aerobatics in the previous year. This includes any IAC member who has contributed to the sport, not just American members but all IAC members throughout the world. Although the master trophy resides at the IAC pavilion in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, the recipient will receive a laser cut plaque with a photograph of the permanent trophy set in the plaque. The plaque will be presented this year at the US Nationals awards banquet. The Harold E. Neumann Award for Outstanding Contribution as a Chief Judge The family of Harold E. Neumann has donated the funds necessary to establish a permanent trophy in the name of Harold E. Neumann. This aerobatic Hall of Fame member was also known for his contribution to the sport as a judge at our aerobatic contests. Robert and Karen Minkus conceived the idea for presenting a trophy to the outstanding Chief Judge each year. This challenging contest position demands a person with considerable knowledge of the IAC contest rules, the experience to deal with the many varied and unusual situations that occur at contests, and the ability to make sound decisions regarding the operation of the contest flights. This award is presented the year following the contest year for which it is presented. Thus, nominations are based on outstanding Chief Judging in the year 1999. The recipient will this year receive a plaque at the US Nationals awards banquet and the master trophy remains on display in the IAC Pavilion in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The Kathy Jaffe Volunteer Award This award was donated in the memory of Kathleen Jaffe. Her spirit and enthusiasm for aerobatics and the aerobatic community were truly remarkable. She was president of Chapter 52, contest director, newsletter editor, and contributor to Sport Aerobatics magazine. Kathy also gave lectures to everyone from aviation related groups to schoolchildren on the joy of flying and especially aerobatics. She was also a competition pilot. She died in 1999. The purpose of this award is to recognize the outstanding volunteer during the previous year. General guidelines are that this person is one who consistently, unselfishly and eagerly accepts more responsibilities than he or she can handle, meets these responsibilities with tireless effort, efficiency and a smile, and who places the needs of others above his or her own, making the sport of aerobatics more enjoyable for everyone. The Master trophy and the annual recipient trophies will be funded by the Kathy Jaffe Memorial Fund. The recipient trophy will consist of a plaque with the individual's name engraved on it. The Master trophy will be on display at the IAC pavilion in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. It will be engraved with each annual recipient's name. The plaque will be presented for the first time at the US Nationals awards banquet this year. The last date nominations can be entered is June 15, 2000. Please send your nominations to: Loren G. Smith IAC Awards Administration 2254 Edgcumbe Road Saint Paul, MN 55116-2448 E-mail address: LoSoAviation at worldnet.att.net Yours truly, Loren G. Smith Awards Chairman Attachement 1: winmail.dat
